As you probably know by now, Erudus is a market leading source of accurate allergy, nutritional and technical product data, populated by the food industry. But we don’t stop at providing data, at Erudus we’ve also created a suite of tools and solutions to use alongside that data that will help you improve efficiency, and save time and money in your business.
Welcome to our series exploring the range of Erudus solutions. So far we’ve explored our Technical Data Search, the Allergen & Nutritional Data Search, Recipe Builder tool, Menu Planner and Image Hub.
Now we’re going to take a closer look at the Erudus APIs…
What is the Erudus API?
Our API (Application Programming Interface) system is an intermediary between 2 pieces of software - i.e the Erudus database and a business’s internal system. It allows users to view and add product information (such as allergen content) to their own system without having to manually log into Erudus and retrieve the information to then either download a CSV file or input into their system.
Essentially, with the Erudus API, a user’s system can send a requirement to Erudus via the API interface saying (in essence):
’Erudus, can you tell me if there are any allergens in this tin of soup?’ Erudus can then go and check if there are any allergens and then tell the user system action either ‘no there aren’t’ or ‘yes, here's the full list of allergens contained’.
Upon receipt of this list, the user system can display the allergens by product. This enables others in the business - Customer Support for example, to instantly answer customer queries with confidence.
Erudus has 2 types of APIs - Public API and Manufacturer API. The Public API allows users to view or download product information. The Manufacturer API allows users to add information in addition to viewing and downloading.
Essentially, the only difference between the 2 is that the Public API can only pull information from Erudus, whereas the Manufacturer can both pull and add information.
Via our API, you can call for and download PDF copies of the Erudus specifications.

Manufacturers
Manufacturers should use the Manufacturer API, which allows them to:
- Tap into the Erudus Data Pool and share products and technical data with the industry.
- Remove the need to manually enter product data, saving time and resources.
- Push product changes live.
- Automatically add, update or delist products in the Erudus Data Pool straight from in-house systems, reducing costs associated with communicating product data.
Wholesalers
Wholesalers should use the Public API, which allows them to:
- Tap into the Erudus data pool and power their own solutions.
- Streamline the way Erudus data is accessed, and transported into a company’s in-house systems in a fast and efficient way.
- Match with over 60,000 products using the barcode, supplier’s item number or a Wholesaler’s own ‘local product’ code to return data requirements.
Users can access the Erudus Image Hub via API and call for and download thousands of product images.
