Add Your Local Codes
Adding your local product codes to Erudus is not only simple to do, but it unlocks a host of benefits.
You can already search for products using the product name, inner and outer GTIN (barcodes) and the supplier’s code. Once you’ve added your local product codes, you can search using them too, making it even quicker to access product details and taking you straight to the product detail page.
“We have uploaded and matched around 9,200 of our local product codes to Erudus; this makes searching for products so much easier for not only our customers but for myself and my colleagues who also have access to the system.
“We actively encourage our customers to use Erudus as their source of allergen information, indirectly encouraging paperless environments in the process.”
Martyn Simpson, Product Administrator at Castell Howell
Better Reporting & Product Data
Once your local products are added, you unlock the reporting power of the ‘Query Builder’, which we’ll come on to later in this article. This allows you to download a CSV (Excel file) from your member dashboard containing every product you have a local code matched against. This report includes every one of the 200+ attributes and, most importantly, your local product codes are assigned to each of the products.
Using the Query Builder with your local product codes opens up all kinds of reporting criteria. Foremost is the ability to filter down the results to just the products in your range, so only the products you stock or those you are interested in, rather than the 60,000+ other products held in the Erudus Data Pool.
How to Add Your Local Product Codes
There are two ways you can add your local codes in Erudus. Firstly, by searching each product individually from the products menu in your member dashboard and manually adding your local codes. A walkthrough guide of how to do this can be found here
This method is ideal for quickly adding codes on the fly. What it’s not suitable for is bulk adding of codes. If you are looking to match your entire product range this isn’t the option for you; it would be far too time-consuming. Better to use the second option, the CSV upload tool. This option is a much quicker method for wholesalers with extensive range lists looking to match local product codes in bulk.
You create a simple CSV file using a spreadsheet application like Microsoft Excel, containing your local product code in one column and the products outer GTIN in another. Once created you upload the file to Erudus and all the matching is carried out automatically in the background.
You can find a detailed walkthrough on how to do this here.
Most wholesalers use a combination of both methods, preferring the CSV for bulk uploads and the member dashboard route for amendments, new products and delists.
For some wholesalers who don’t store barcode information on their systems, all is not lost!
We would urge you to consider capturing barcode information moving forward. We’ve written a piece on ‘The Importance of Barcodes, adopt or get left behind’ which is well worth a read for any wholesaler not currently capturing barcode information.
Using Query Builder
Using the Query Builder can help you gain a deeper understanding of your product range and, once mastered, you can answer questions that arise from customers and tenders in just a few minutes, questions such as:
- What’s our gluten free range?
- What products do you stock that are halal and also low in fat?
- How many organic products do we stock?
- What percentage of our range is BRC accredited?
The Query Builder is a powerful search tool. If you can dream up the criteria, chances are the Query Builder can answer it for you. For example, Erudus lists 204 products that match the following criteria: –
- In the ‘Desserts’ product Type
- Does not contain Tree Nuts
- Less than 5g of Fat
- Suitable for Vegan
- Contains no artificial colours
- Contains no artificial preservatives
Once the criteria are set, you can customise the attribute data you’d like returned using the ‘Include’ options, allowing you to show as much or as little information as you need.
Save & Re-run
Once you’ve created and run your query, you have the option to save it for future use.
At the top of the screen are some options under the title ‘Save this query to re-run another time’. Here you can give the query a name, save it and view other saved queries.
The three most popular searches carried out by wholesalers using Query Builder are: –
- Gluten free
- Suitable for Vegan
- Does Not Contain Nuts
We recommend setting these queries up and saving them for future use.
Share Your Range List
Sharing your range list helps us to identify products that you stock which are not listed in the Erudus Data Pool. We call this the ‘gap’.
Once identified we work with you to address the ‘gap’ products and increase your total product coverage within Erudus. What is more, as part of this process we’ll match up your local codes for you, saving you, even more, time and effort.

“Creed Foodservice have a big drive this year to increase our supplier engagement with Erudus. By having the majority of our products that we purchase all in one centralised area will be a massive advantage for us. Currently, we have around 64% of our products matched up to the system and have a target of 75% by the end of the year.
“It’s fantastic to see an online solution helping to tackle the current industry issue of lack of access to up-to-date product data.”
Rosie Ward, Technical Manager at Creed Foodservice
