New Update: New Packaging Model

A whole slate of exciting new additions and updates are coming to Erudus, scheduled to go live on 8 January 2024. Well, that date is drawing nearer, but in the meantime we’re giving you a head start on what to expect by sharing the details of some of the most exciting upgrades to the system.

And it’s now the turn of a major update to the waste packaging data model, sure to have positive repercussions for our Manufacturer users...

What is changing in regards to the Packaging Model?

Currently, Manufacturers on Erudus can document the total packaging material weights at the different packaging layers (outer case, inner product and transport packaging), on their product specifications.

As of 8th January, we are introducing a new (optional) layer of packaging to the model and have changed terminology slightly. So the options will now be:

  • Outer Case
  • Inner Pack (optional)
  • Inner Component
  • Transport Packaging

The new layer has been introduced to reduce confusion where there is a middle layer of packaging between the inner component and the outer case. This will make product specifications clearer.

Going forward, instead of just documenting a single packaging type at each layer and the total material weights, Manufacturers will be able to document multiple, individual packaging components at each packaging layer. For example, if a user has a specification for bottled water, currently they would say the inner packaging type is a bottle and then declare the total amount of plastic and paper used.

In the new model, the user can document the bottle, the lid, the label and the different packaging materials used.

In addition to the base material used for packaging, we are allowing Manufacturers to document the extended material e.g. if plastic is used what specific type of plastic it is, whether the packaging is recyclable and whether the packaging is returnable.

How does the new model benefit Manufacturers?

Ultimately, this new model makes Erudus specifications more robust, by having more specific information available and offering attributes that document packaging layers more accurately. This is advantageous on several accounts - firstly, by utilising the new packaging data model Manufacturers can reduce requests for additional information from their customers - saving time and human resources by removing the need to source and send this information to individuals that request it.

Secondly, by making Erudus specifications more robust and therefore increasing their utility, Manufacturers would be able to utilise Erudus as their primary specification database - which would reduce duplication of workload in maintaining internal specifications alongside those on their Erudus account.

How does the new model benefit Wholesalers?

Wholesalers will be getting access to more robust product data, which means that they won’t need to solicit additional information regarding product data from their suppliers because it will all be in Erudus. This saves time and human resource and drives efficiency through the whole supply chain.

Do Manufacturers need to do anything before these changes kick in?

No, but post-launch, it will be prudent for Manufacturers to review their packaging as soon as possible to take advantage of the improved new data model.

How does the new Packaging Model help businesses comply with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)?

The new packaging layer that is being introduced, in addition to the introduction of more granular base and extended materials for packaging components, aligns with the packaging materials and packaging layers of EPR - which means the Erudus dataset for waste packaging will be able to be used when processing calculations related to EPR legislation.
