Two years ago we introduced a subscription charge for Manufacturers for the continued use of Erudus to communicate your product specification data to the Wholesaler customers and in turn your Caterer customers.
Over the two year period, a lot has changed, none more so than the adoption rate of Erudus within the food industry, specifically within the Wholesaler community. 100 Wholesalers and 85,000 Caterers now fundamentally rely on Erudus to provide them with your product specification data and that of 2,479 other Manufacturers.
Erudus has fast become the industry go-to for information relating to product specifications. More recently we have started communicating your product specification data even further across the industry via a series of integrations with carefully selected 3rd party software providers. Providing the industry with a single source of truth and giving you, the Manufacturer, a single place to publish your product specification data.
We want to continue to add more 3rd party software providers to the list of integrations and based on your feedback we want to develop more value adding features and new solutions for Manufacturers to help you save time and money.
As the usage and sophistication of Erudus increases so too do the associated running costs, which brings us to the topic of subscription model changes.
We tried two different approaches to our subscription model:
2015: manufacturers paid per SKU. This proved to be counterproductive, resulting in Manufacturers only listing a handful of products to keep costs minimal. This proved frustrating for Wholesalers and Caterers as there were significant gaps in a Manufacturer’s range. It also restricted the rate at which we could develop the Erudus platform.
2016: we moved to a traditional subscription based model, lifting the restrictions on the number of SKUs a Manufacturer could publish. The subscription model was without question a step forward, resulting in a sharp uplift in the volume of products Manufacturers chose to list, but still, it wasn’t quite right, regarding the feature sets included within different subscription plans.
Feedback from our Manufacturer community was mixed. Many SME businesses wanted to take full advantage of the feature sets but were reluctant to subscribe to the Pro plan. Others, who were less price conscious, only wanted a subset of features, whereas many larger organisations took full advantage of the features and opted for the API to publish their product specifications automatically.
With such a mix of feature requirements amongst Manufacturers it is a complicated balancing act of getting the right features to fit a plan’s price point. So with this in mind, we are announcing a complete overhaul of the subscription model for Manufacturers. One which we believe will provide the right feature sets and one that will provide an increased income allowing us to further develop the Erudus platform, ultimately resulting in more value for our users.
New Subscription Model, Turnover
We conclude that moving away from the existing ‘subscription plan’ model and opting for a ‘Turnover based subscription’ model is the best and fairest way to move forward.
All solutions and feature sets will be available immediately, and we are lifting all limitations on the number of users/products you can have, along with restrictions on the Wholesalers who can access your product specifications.

The change will take effect on 1st July 2018 for new Manufacturers and will be effective from 1st October 2018 for existing Manufacturers.
We appreciate that a number of our Manufacturer users will see a significant price increase from last year. Erudus has been making significant steps and constant progress in developing the industry’s collaborative solution to communicating product data, and we believe the solution you are using today is a very different proposition to that of two years ago. With more Wholesalers using the platform than ever before and 3rd party integrations pushing your product data even further across the industry.
We continue to work hard to make Erudus even better for you, and we have some exciting new developments in the pipeline specifically for Manufacturers, which we will be releasing shortly. These include:
- A plugin to display your product specifications on your website
- Nutritional calculation tool
- Visibility on which Wholesalers are looking at your products
- Image / Asset Management allowing you to distribute your product imagery via Erudus
To help manage the price changes, we are continuing to offer a 10% discount for displaying an ‘Erudus Web Badge’ on your website. We are also continuing with the flexible payment options, allowing you to spread the subscription cost over 12 months.
